I think governments are starting to realise the important role that designers play in developed nations. Japan for example has set up a division in its government that specifically deals with how design can boost its economy. Their focus seems to be (at the moment) on the role design plays in cultural exports.
Japan is not the first to realise the importance of design. Tony Blair initiated the ‘Creative Britain’ in 1997. The result for Briton’s creative industry has been very positive. It grew at twice the rate of the economy as a whole between 1997 and 2004, averaging five per cent a year.
I think that the government initiative definitely played a role in the growth of UK’s creative industry. This make me think that it is also another very important factor to consider when choosing a country to set up our future company.
